Bono and U2 Give T-Total Guitarist Slash Guinness As A Gift
Singer Bono and his U2 collegues might have been instilled with a sense of generosity recently, but boy are they rubbish at with gifts. Having annoyed millions of people by clogging their iTunes players with an album they didn’t want, the Irish rock legends have put their foot in it again this week after sending an ill advised present to former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. Specifically, as the Irish Independent reports, they thought it would be a good idea to a crate of Guinness to a recovering alcoholic.
Slash was given the drink when he arrived in Dublin to play a show with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators. Taking the gaffe in his stride, the guitarist seemed to be in good spirits about the situation, and even thanked U2 for their generosity on Twitter: “Many thanks to @U2 for the ‘Welcome to Dublin; case of Guinness! The only thing I miss about being sober.”
Giving Slash a crate of Guinness was obviously an unintentional faux-pas on the part of U2, but you’ve got to wonder why nobody in the band’s camp did any research before sending it. Slash has been very public about being in recovery from alcohol addiction, having told the press that booze was harder to give up than heroin and that he was once given weeks to live because of the extent of his heavy drinking.
