Arctic Monkeys Lead Singer Alex Turner Says He Laughs At Fame
He’s gone from being the shy lead singer to making controversial award speeches but Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, says he makes sure he laughs at his fame in order to keep himself sane in the music industry.
The 28-year-old, who claimed that “rock ’n’ roll will never die” during a convoluted Brit Awards acceptance speech in February, says he is keen not to take his high-profile status too seriously for fear of becoming “ugly”.
When asked what makes a good front man Alex tells Esquire magazine: “Certainly, in this day and age, a sense of humour, because it’s pretty ridiculous.
“Not to name-drop but we bumped into [Led Zeppelin front man] Robert Plant last night and he is hilarious. Just funny, straight away.
“These days I think if you start taking it too seriously, which I’m sometimes defi nitely in danger of doing… then it gets ugly.”
Turner, who dated TV presenter Alexa Chung for four years and now lives in LA with his current girlfriend Arielle Vandenberg, says his secret to chart success is writing about his love life.
“I haven’t really found a way round it yet,” he says. “There’s other things I eventually might get round to writing about.
“But for now… in a sense they’re about girls. But in a sense they’re about loneliness. And longing.”
