Lana Del Rey’s Muse Is ‘Very Fickle’

Thursday, October 24th, 2013

Pop star Lana Del Rey is having trouble finding inspiration to write a full-length follow-up to her 2012 breakthrough, Born to Die.

“When people ask me about it, I just have to be honest — I really don’t know,” she said about a possible new album. “I don’t want to say, ‘Yeah, definitely — the next one’s better than this one,’ because I don’t really hear a next one. My muse is very fickle. She only comes to me sometimes, which is annoying.”

Regarding her writing process now that she’s achieved fame, she said, “It’s harder to be an observer when people are watching you. You have to go further inside because the outside world becomes a harder place to draw from.”

Del Rey also addresses Tropico, the short film she teased back in July. “It’s Elvis and Jesus and Marilyn and extraterrestrials all in one,” she said.

Since the release of Born to Die, an album that received mixed reviews and much debate about her authenticity online, Del Rey has become a chart success. The album made it to No. 2 on the Billboard chart and has since been certified gold. And her single, “Summertime Sadness,” has sold over 1 million downloads and it made it into the Top 10 this year, thanks to a little help from remixer Cedric Gervais.
